How to Counter Caitlyn in League of Legends

Caitlyn has a particular existence among the ADC champion pool. While she hasn’t got the highest skill expression, she still requires impeccable mechanics to be able to draw out the maximum potential, especially when it comes to laning fundamentals.

Thanks to her superior range and ability to harass the enemy, she is usually picked to exert lane early-game dominance to snowball the leads through gold and experience leads. This makes her extremely tough to deal with, as most champions struggle to beat her in the lane. That said, there are a few counters you should consider playing against her: here are the best three.

1. Jinx – the late game counter

Whenever you’re playing Jinx, bare in mind that the chances of you winning the lane are slim. Caitlyn will still be able to dictate the flow of the lane but at least you can make sure to hold the lane better than other champions thanks to the Q’s rocket form. Later in the game, Jinx can easily take over the game, so it’s basically a waiting game: play safe and you’ll reap the rewards of the counter pick later.

2. Ezreal – harass vs harass

Ezreal is one of the few champions that can match Caitlyn during the laning phase since both champions have long-range abilities. The thing is that Caitlyn will still have a bit better of a push so Ezreal must find ways to dodge the enemies’ spells and hit his own to have a chance to look for lethal.

3. Kalista – the lane counter

When it comes to lane counters, Kalista is probably your best choice. This is because her passive allows her to easily dodge Caitlyn’s traps and abilities while offering similar levels of early-game trading. The key in this matchup is finding the right opportunities to force trades and create a healthy lead over the opponent. The three best counters are Jinx, Ezreal, and Kalista. Other strong counters are Ashe, Sivir, and Twitch.

1. Laning Against Caitlyn

• Take note of the in-game audio- you can hear when Caitlyn places her Yordle Snap Trap W. If you can’t see where the Trap Yordle Snap Trap W has been placed, it’s probably behind your tower. Stay away from your tower when you’re being pushed in.
• Try and stay at max range away from Caitlyn at all times. This is especially true when Caitlyn has her empowered auto-attack ready to fire. If she is holding her empowered auto, wait for her to use it before moving forward.
• Caitlyn will be looking to push and take your tower early. Don’t let her poke you down by sacrificing CS for health and XP. When she is overextended, request assistance from your Mid laner or Jungler to help you shut her down.

2. Strategy VS Caitlyn

• Caitlyn has limited self peel outside of her . Whenever she is overextended with her 90 Caliber Net E on cooldown, you should look to take her down. If she is not using her 90 Caliber Net E and is playing safe, you could try a Flash engage or ambush her from inside a bush.
• An enemy Caitlyn can dish out a lot of damage in a team fight if she is left unchecked. Try to focus her down as soon as possible so she is unable to dish out lots of damage. If she is being protected, try to flank her.
• Punishing Caitlyn in the early game will reduce her ability to snowball and destroy your tower. Try and set her behind by killing her over and over with assistance from your allies.

3. Caitlyn Power Spikes

• Caitlyn will spike when she has two items. Respect her all-in damage as she can easily kill you if you disrespect her damage output.
• Whenever Caitlyn has her empowered auto-attack ready and primed, you need to play safe so she doesn’t use it on you. Wait for her to consume it before engaging.
• At level 6, Caitlyn can execute an enemy with her Ultimate Ace in the Hole R. Do not overstay your welcome by recalling when you’re low. Try and recall out of vision so she can’t use it on you.
