Aatrox does a lot of damage and kiting. Iceborn rush is very important into him to limit that.

Hullbreaker 2nd will increase Voli's trading power with Q and W. The movement speed will help stay on top of him. Aatrox will be vulnerable against Voli on a cannon wave with Hullbreaker's buff.

Riftmaker will not only increase Voli's damage, but allow him to duel Aatrox and match his mid to late game sustain.

Spirit Visage will increase this and Morello with ignite should always win the fight and take him out in team fights before he kills your team.

Garen does a lot of kiting and shredding. Hullbreaker rush is good into him as he cannot all in on you if you are faster than him.

Boots of Swiftness with hullbreaker will make it difficult for Garen to make a decent trade against Voli and the cannon waves will have a Hullbreaker buff, which will make it easier to get plates from the tower before he shreds the wave down.

Warmog's 2nd to match Garen's regeneration passive, but also increase Voli's movement speed even more. Warmog's will also help you attack tower a bit longer as Garen will be able to clear the wave faster later in the game. The regeneration out of combat will allow Voli to keep the pressure.

Iceborn 3rd to have control of Garen's movement speed. Spirit Visage to increase Voli's E shield which protects him from getting shredded by Garen's E and to also increase his W bite heal. Its important to keep Voli's health up so Garen cannot execute him with his ultimate.

Last item Riftmaker because it scales with health granting Voli more AP, which is good with his passive, E, and because you have Spirit Visage, the omnivamp from Riftmaker will help keep Voli sustained.

Kench cannot really duel with the Volibear when he has Riftmaker. The bonus damage and sustain will shred/burst him down.

Kench can't clear very fast so Hullbreaker on a cannon wave will make it even harder for him to fight Volibear and the wave.

Stormsurge has magic pen and movement speed, which allows Voli to dodge Kench's tongues, and dive ability.

Shadowflame has even more magic pen. The reason magic pen is good against Kench is because he has more armor scalings than he does of magic resist. Shadowflame will cause Voli's passive and E to apply magic crit damage.

Nashor's Tooth at the end will increase this damage and stack Riftmaker faster for the omnivamp sustain in combat.

Gragas is a tricky one and a difficult one to kill in the lane phase. He can easily outplay and out trade. My preference into him is to just rush Hullbreaker because he will be too busy trying to combo me, but that becomes rather difficult for him to do against a buffed cannon from Hullbreaker's passive.

Avoid trying to kill him unless he messes up his combo. Focus on farming and plates. If he tries to ult you, save your ult for that moment and he can't really do much. Once you have Nashor's, you will be able to force out his ult sooner so you can all in on him. If Gragas leaves lane to help team, you should be able to quickly punish him for doing so by mowing down towers with all the attack speed you have setting off Hullbreaker's skipper passive every 5th auto attack.

Gragas does a lot of kiting so Iceborn is really good into him, but also you will most likely be dealing with one player or 2 that has Blade of the Ruined King. You want to be ready for them because they are more of a threat.

The slows will help you land E and the on-hit magic damage passive. Spirit Visage will help increase E's shield while you protect yourself from Gragas' combo and when you're locked onto him with Iceborn, W's healing will be increased. Riftmaker for more sustain and damage.

Once in a while you might find yourself in a troll matchup or well in higher you climb, the more ranged Top laners you will encounter. Nilah Top could be interesting as she can dodge Volibear's engage making it difficult to lock her down. For this reason we want to rush Iceborn to catch her with the W slow instead of Q and just walk up with her for the 2nd W and finish her off once Q is back.

Boots of Swifness and Hullbreaker's movement speed will help with this. Morello is also important to cut Nilah's sustain down as you increase yours with Spirit Visage and Riftmaker.

I usually like to rush Serpent's into Ambessa. Its cheap and I can usually get it before she gets Eclipse. Otherwise you could start Iceborn into Serpent's if you cannot get an early lead. Serpent's is good into Ambessa because her only way to engage to win is when she uses her shield. Cutting that down limits her ability to win a trade enough to all in or protect herself from minions.

Hullbreaker is good into her as the cannon minion will do more damage to her as you reduce her shield. She will have a difficult time engaging you and get a solid trade. I usually build Chain Vest into Hullbreaker just so I have some armor.

Iceborn is important because Amebessa has a passive that allows her to dash after using an ability. This is usually why she wins trades. She is able to cut you down before you can even reach her, but because of Serpent's, she cannot afford to get slowed by Iceborn.

Riftmaker for more damage and Spirit Visage to increase sustain to out duel her in the late game.
