Big Tips for Starting Genshin Impact

When starting a new account, choose one character to focus on. This should typically be an on-field DPS or a strong off-field DPS. While deciding which character to focus on, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Avoid Inazuma Characters Early On: Characters from Inazuma require level-up materials that are locked behind two whole Archon Quests. This means you won’t be able to ascend your character until quite late in the game.

  • Choose Characters You Like: This is possibly the most important tip. No matter what you see online about certain characters being the best or others being the worst, always go for the character you like the most. Whether it's because you love their design, story, or personality, pick a character that resonates with you.

  • DO NOT wish on the weapon banner: I know the weapons might look amazing but the weapon banner is widely known as a scam and specially for beggining a new journey its not recommended at all

Genshin Impact is unique in that any character can complete all the game's content, from the beginning to beating the Spiral Abyss with 36 stars. While choosing a strong character might make the game easier, you will enjoy it much more with a character you genuinely like than with an "overpowered" one you don't.

TLDR:

  • Focus on One Character: Preferably an on-field or strong off-field DPS.
  • Avoid Inazuma Characters Early: Due to late-game material accessibility.
  • Choose Based on Preference: Enjoyment comes from liking your character, not just their power.
  • Avoid Weapon Banner

Next, I will provide some recommendations for On-field/Off-field dps Characters to look out for.

Team Building for Beginners

Before diving further into the game, if you are truly a beginner, here are some general tips about the structure of Genshin Impact. It’s easy to feel confused or overwhelmed when starting your journey, especially with all the elements and their reactions. Here are some guidelines to help you understand the basics:

Understanding Elements and Reactions A team is usually built around one main elemental reaction. While some teams might cause additional reactions, there is typically one primary reaction you want to aim for, with others acting as beneficial side effects. Here’s a breakdown of the elements with unique specifics: Anemo, Geo, and Dendro.

  1. Anemo
  • Reaction: Swirl - Anemo reacts with any element (except Geo, Dendro, or itself) to cause Swirl.
  • Unique Feature: The damage from Swirl relies purely on your character’s Elemental Mastery.
  1. Geo
  • Reaction: Crystallize - Geo reacts with other elements (except Anemo, Dendro, or itself) to create Crystallize.
  • Unique Feature: Crystallize generates a shield based on the element it reacts with, but it is often seen as lackluster in the Genshin community.
  • Geo Teams: Due to the limited usefulness of Crystallize, effective Geo teams often use 3 or 4 Geo characters, known as Mono Geo teams.
  1. Dendro
  • Complex Reactions: Dendro is one of the best elements in the game due to its complex reactions.
  • Bloom: Dendro + Hydro creates Blooms, which explode over time.
  • Hyperbloom: Dendro + Hydro + Electro creates Hyperbloom, one of the best reactions.
  • Burgeon: Dendro + Hydro + Pyro creates Burgeon.
  • Aggravate and Spread: Dendro + Electro or Dendro + Electro + Dendro creates Aggravate and Spread
  • All these reactions are also focused around Elemental Mastery of the character
  • Non-Reactive with Anemo and Geo: Dendro does not react with Anemo or Geo, as previously explained but also does not react to Cryo.

Composing a Team When composing a team, the usual strategy is:

  • Main On-Field DPS: This is your primary damage dealer.
  • Two Off-Field DPS: These characters provide additional damage and sometimes support while your main DPS is on the field.
  • Support: This can be a healer or a shielder, providing essential support to keep your team alive.

Example Team Composition: Hu Tao Vape Team

  • Main On-Field DPS: Hu Tao
  • Off-Field DPS and Support: Xingqiu (provides Hydro for vaporize reactions), Kazuha (provides crowd control and additional elemental damage)
  • Support: Thoma (provides shields)

While this team composition is not always necessary, following this general guideline will put you on the right path for creating effective teams.

AR 1 - 15

Whether you're a new player or starting a second account, here’s how to best begin your journey from Adventure Rank 1 to 15:

  • Level a Good Weapon to 20: This should be your first priority. A leveled weapon significantly boosts your damage output early on.

  • Level Your Artifact Feather to +4: Aim for a 4-star feather if possible, but due to its rarity at this point, a 3-star feather is a good alternative.

  • Level Your Chosen Character to 19: Yes, 19—not 20. This is because you gain character EXP from gameplay, so you'll reach level 20 naturally and efficiently.

Optional Steps:

  • Level Supporting Characters to 19: This isn’t mandatory, but it can help. Leveling them to 10 is sufficient for the early game if resources are tight.
  • Upgrade Offensive Artifacts to +4: This includes any offensive artifacts you have. At this stage, the resources required for such upgrades are minimal.

Reasoning Behind Priorities: The order of these priorities is based on cost efficiency and maximizing your character’s performance early in the game. Investing in a good weapon and a key artifact first provides the best returns for your efforts and resources.

Next, I will provide some recommendations for weapons and artifacts to look out for.

AR 15 - 25

Now that you have reached AR 15, what should your priorities be? Similar to before, the order will remain very much the same. Here’s what you should prioritize from AR 15 to AR 25:

  • Level Your Weapon to 40: Focus on leveling the weapon of your chosen character first.
  • Level Your Chosen Character to 39: Aim to level up your main character to 39.
  • Upgrade Your 3/4-Star Feather to +8: Enhance your feather artifact to +8 for significant stat boosts.
  • Level Other Artifacts to +8: Enhance the rest of your artifacts to +8 to further strengthen your character.

Managing Your Resin: At this point, you might be wondering what to do with your resin. Here are some recommendations:

  • Farm Weapon Ascension Materials: If you need to upgrade a weapon you will use, focus on gathering these materials.
  • Farm Ley Lines: Choose between gold or character EXP books based on what you lack the most.

Although you might see videos of players using their resin on artifacts, this is only recommended at AR 45+ for reasons that will be covered later.

AR 25 - 29

Upon reaching AR 25, you will encounter a World Ascension quest. Completing this quest should be your first priority at this stage. Here’s what you should prioritize from AR 25 to AR 29:

  • Complete Your World Ascension Quest: This is your top priority as it will increase your World Level and unlock higher-level rewards.
  • Level Your Weapon to 50: Focus on leveling the weapon of your chosen character to 50.
  • Replace 3-Star Artifacts with 4-Star Artifacts: By this point, you should transition from using 3-star artifacts to 4-star artifacts, if you haven't already.
  • Ascend Your Chosen Character: Ascend your main character to unlock higher level caps.
  • Upgrade Talents to Level 2: Start upgrading your character’s talents. While researching which talents to prioritize can be beneficial, leveling them to 2 isn’t a significant resource commitment.
  • Level Your Chosen Character to 49: Aim to level up your main character to 49.

Optional: Investing in Supporting Characters If you have a well-established team and not just a mix of characters, consider gradually investing in your supporting characters. Apply the same resource-efficient priorities as you did with your chosen character:

  • Level their weapons: Incrementally level their weapons to improve their support capabilities.
  • Upgrade their artifacts: Replace 3-star artifacts with 4-star artifacts as they become available.
  • Ascend them and upgrade talents: Ascend your supporting characters and consider upgrading their talents to level

This doesn’t require a significant resource investment and can provide useful boosts.

This approach allows you to build a balanced team without overwhelming your resources.

AR 30 - 34

As you progress from AR 30 to AR 34, your priorities will continue to focus on strengthening your chosen character and building a balanced team. Here’s what you should prioritize:

  • Level Your Chosen Character's Weapon to 60: Continue focusing on the weapon of your main character.
  • Ascend Your Chosen Character: Ascend your main character to unlock higher level caps and further strengthen them.
  • Upgrade Significant Talents to Level 4: Increase the talents that are most important for your chosen character's performance to level 4.
  • Level Your 4-Star Artifacts to +12: Enhance your 4-star artifacts to +12 for substantial stat boosts.
  • Level Your Chosen Character to 59: Aim to level up your main character to 59.

Investing in Your Other Characters

At this point, you should have a decent team built. It's a good idea to start investing in your other characters, but ensure it doesn't cause a significant lack of resources for your account. Here are some additional tips:

  • Avoid Frequent Switching: Constantly switching characters can strain your resources and hinder your progress. Decide on characters you genuinely like and good teams for them that you also enjoy playing with.
  • Be Thoughtful About Resources: This doesn't mean you should ignore new characters you like, but be mindful of how you allocate your resources. Focus on building a cohesive and effective team rather than spreading resources too thin.

By following these guidelines, you'll maintain a balanced approach to character development and resource management, ensuring steady progress in the game.

AR 35 - 39

IMPORTANT: Managing Your World Level As you progress from AR 35 to AR 39, it’s crucial to understand the importance of managing your World Level. While previously your priority was to increase your World Level, at this stage, it should be your last priority. Here’s why:

Storing Adventure Rank (AR) Experience If you're concerned about losing experience, don’t worry. The experience you gain is stored and will be applied when you eventually increase your World Level. For instance, if you gain enough experience for two levels, you’ll go from AR 35 to 37 once you ascend your World Level.

Why Delay Ascending Your World Level? Right now is a good time to take it slow and ensure you are ready to face the more challenging stages of the game. Use this period to:

  • Build Your Team: Strengthen all your team members. Make sure each character is at a good point and doesn’t feel useless.
  • Experiment with New Characters: If you’ve found a new character you like and want to replace someone in your team, this is a good time for adjustments.

Preparing for Ascension Once you feel your team works well together and is strong enough, you can ascend your World Level. After ascending, follow these priorities:

  • Level Your Chosen Character's Weapon to 70: Enhance the weapon of your main character to level 70.
  • Ascend Your Chosen Character: Ascend your main character to unlock higher level caps.
  • Increase Significant Talents to Level 6: Upgrade the important talents of your chosen character to level 6.
  • Level Your 4-Star Artifacts to +16: Enhance your 4-star artifacts to +16 for substantial stat boosts.

Strengthen Your Team:

  • Level Other Characters' Weapons to 70: Ensure that the weapons of your other team members are leveled up to 70.
  • Ascend Other Characters to Level 60+: Ascend your supporting characters to at least level 60.
  • Increase Talents to Level 6: Upgrade their talents to level 6.
  • Enhance Artifacts to +12: Level their artifacts to +12.

By following these steps, you'll ensure your team is well-prepared for the challenges ahead and make the most of your resources without rushing your progression.

AR 40 - 45

At this point, you should start considering building a second team for the Spiral Abyss. However, don’t pour all your resources into this new team just yet; begin building it gradually.

Main Priorities

  • Level Your Chosen Character's Weapon to 80: Enhance the weapon of your main character to level 80.
  • Ascend Your Chosen Character: Ascend your main character to unlock higher level caps.
  • Upgrade Talents to Level 8: Increase the significant talents of your chosen character to level 8.
  • Level Your Chosen Character to 79: Aim to level up your main character to 79.

IMPORTANT: Managing Your World Level Do not increase your World Level at this stage. Take your time to build and optimize your team. Only when you reach AR 45 should you consider the following:

  • Start Farming 5-Star Artifacts: Begin farming 5-star artifacts for your main team.
  • Level Team Weapons to 80: Enhance your main team’s weapons to level 80.
  • Level Other Team Members to 70+: Ensure that your other team members are at least level 70.
  • Enhance New 5-Star Artifacts to +16: Upgrade the new 5-star artifacts to +16 for your main team.

Building a Second Team While focusing on your main priorities, gradually start building a second team for the Spiral Abyss. Allocate resources slowly to avoid overwhelming your main team’s progression

Preparing for AR 45 Before proceeding further, the next section of this guide will provide specific advice on the best artifacts to farm for efficiency once you reach AR 45. This will ensure you make the most out of your resources and optimize your team's performance effectively.

AR 45 - 49

At this stage, the main building of your account is done. Here’s what you should focus on:

  • Continue Farming 5-Star Artifacts: This will likely be your main use of resin when you’re not actively building a character.
  • Level Decent/Good 5-Star Artifacts to +20: Enhance your valuable 5-star artifacts to +20.

To provide more depth, let's discuss what makes an artifact good or not without getting too in-depth.

Understanding Good vs. Bad Artifacts Good Artifacts

  • Main Stat: Prioritize artifacts with the appropriate main stats for your character (e.g., ATK% for DPS, HP% for HP-based characters).
  • Substats: Look for substats that complement your character’s build. Ideal substats typically include Crit Rate, Crit Damage, ATK%, Energy Recharge, and Elemental Mastery.
  • Set Bonuses: Aim for set bonuses that enhance your character’s strengths (e.g., Gladiator's Finale for ATK, Noblesse Oblige for Burst Damage).

Bad Artifacts

  • Wrong Main Stat: Avoid artifacts with main stats that don’t benefit your character (e.g., DEF% for a DPS character).
  • Poor Substats: Artifacts with substats that don’t align with your character’s needs (e.g., DEF% for a character that doesn’t scale with DEF) are less valuable.
  • Mismatched Set Bonuses: Artifacts that don’t contribute to your character’s optimal set bonuses should be lower priority.

Example of a Good Artifact For a DPS character like Diluc, a good artifact might have:

  • Main Stat: ATK% (for Sands), Pyro DMG Bonus (for Goblet), Crit Rate/Crit DMG (for Circlet)
  • Substats: Crit Rate, Crit DMG, ATK%, Energy Recharge
  • Set Bonus: Crimson Witch of Flames (for increased Pyro damage)

By focusing on these priorities and understanding the attributes of good artifacts, you'll be well-equipped to optimize your characters and enhance your overall gameplay experience.

AR 50 - 60

As you approach the maximum Adventure Rank, your priorities will shift towards finalizing and optimizing your teams. Here’s what you should focus on:

  • Do Your World Ascension Quest: This should be your first priority upon reaching AR 50.
  • Level Your Chosen Character's Weapon to 90: Maximize the potential of your main character by leveling their weapon to 90.
  • Level Up Other Characters in Your Main Team: Ensure that all members of your main team are fully leveled and optimized.

Focus on Your Second Team for the Abyss:

  • Start investing in your second team, focusing on:
  • Weapons: Level their weapons to appropriate levels.
  • Talent Levels: Upgrade their talents.
  • Character Levels: Ascend and level up these characters.

Continue Farming 5-Star Artifacts: This remains a crucial activity for optimizing both your main and second teams.

Congratulations!

You have finished this guide! If you followed it closely, you should now have a strong account with minimal wasted resources.

TLDR

Order to Use Your Resin

  • Weapons
  • Talents
  • Ascension Materials
  • Leylines (for EXP or gold if you're lacking)
  • Artifacts

General Strategy

  • Focus on ONE Character: Choose an on-field or off-field DPS character that you really like.
  • Build Your Team Around This Character: Ensure the rest of your team complements your main character to avoid wasting resources, leveling these characters slowly alongside your chosen character.

Additional Tips

Save Your Fragile Resin:

Don't waste fragile resin for quick resin gains. Save it for future characters, especially at higher ARs, so you can quickly build new characters to match your account's standards.

Be Cautious with Artifact Farming:

After AR 45, it's tempting to aim for godly artifacts like those seen online, but remember that artifacts are highly random.

  • Initially, don't be too picky; aim for decent artifacts with good sets for your characters.
  • Once all your characters have decent +20 artifacts, then you can start nitpicking for better ones for your main and other characters.

Maximize Primogem Gains:

Although Genshin Impact’s extensive dialogues can be tedious, exploring and completing quests is the best way to earn primogems and other valuable materials.

Utilize Weekly Tools:

Don't forget to collect and use your Crystalfly Trap and Parametric Transformer weekly.

Understand Unusual Character Scalings:

  • Some characters don't scale with ATK but with other stats like Elemental Mastery, HP, or DEF.
  • Elemental mastery and HP DPS characters usually prioritize their own level over talent level, with some elemental mastery characters not needing talent upgrades at all.
  • Characters that scale with DEF are mainly Geo DPS characters.
  • If your chosen character falls into one of these categories, you might need to adjust the order of upgrades in the guide to suit their unique scaling needs.

I will provide a list of characters with unusual scalings for their best performance in the following section.
