Hextech Chests Return to LoL

In the most recent developer update, Riot Games officially announced the return of Hextech Chests. “It’s clear that for many of you, Hextech Chests weren’t just about the rewards. They were a key part of making your League experience feel fulfilling. We didn’t fully understand how much they meant to you, which led us to make changes that missed the mark,” explained Paul Bellezza, better known as Riot Pabro, Executive Producer of League of Legends.

Starting in Act 2 with Patch 25.05, players will be able to earn up to 10 Hextech Chests and keys per Act. Eight of these chests will be obtainable through the Free Battle Pass, replacing the seasonal skin.

“We’re reintroducing Chests through the Pass rather than champion mastery because we want to make them accessible to all playstyles. Whether you play modes with random champion selection or ones with free choice, or whether you focus on a small pool of champions or play a wide variety, we want to support that,” added Riot Meddler. He also mentioned that the other two chests will be tied to the Honor system. However, in the short term, they will be available through missions while Riot fine-tunes their integration into the Honor system.

Is It Really a Victory?

While many players are thrilled about the return of Hextech Chests, opinions are divided within the community. While a large portion of fans are celebrating, others remain skeptical—not about the chests themselves but about Riot’s overall communication and decision-making approach.

League of Legends influencer Dantes “Doanel” Forlini voiced his concerns about Riot’s inconsistency in communication and decision-making. He and others have criticized Riot’s leadership for making decisions that seem to prioritize profit over player satisfaction.

Doanel also highlighted other recent controversies, including the return of Clash to a monthly schedule despite earlier concerns, and the quiet removal and reinstatement of features like Your Shop and the Essence Emporium. “This feels like a temporary fix to deeper issues with how they view their player base,” he commented on social media.

What’s Next for Riot Games?

This announcement is seen by some as a concession to maintain player loyalty, but the community remains watchful of Riot’s next moves. Although the return of Hextech Chests is seen as a win for now, the bigger question is whether Riot Games will genuinely address the deeper issues that players have raised. The League community might have won this battle, but will it win the war? Only time will tell.
