How to Counter Mel in League of Legends

Riot Games says Mel Medarda in LoL will be more than just a familiar face. She’s adding a new dimension to gameplay. Her abilities will change battles in ways we’ve never seen before. Mel will be the 170th League of Legends champion, making her debut on January 23, 2025, with Patch 25.S1.2.

So, what makes Mel special in a game full of unique characters? She introduces a groundbreaking “projectile reflection” ability. This is the first of its kind in the game. It’s set to change how you fight in team battles and plan your lane strategies.

General advice on how to play against Mel

1. Laning Against Mel

Bait out her W before committing to an all-in or when you use your Ultimate. She could use this spell to counter your all-in and turn the damage back at you. Keep an eye on your health bar at all times, and if you’re coming into execute range, be prepared to recall. You mustn't overstay your welcome in the lane to ensure she doesn’t get a free kill. When playing a melee champion, try not to let her bully and harass you, especially with her Passive, as it will cause extra damage, which could make a difference in the lane.

2. Strategy VS Mel

A good way of baiting her W out in a team fight is by trying to poke her down first. Forcing her to use her W will be crucial in a team fight, and you should only fight her if she has wasted this spell. Look for fights in the open rather than around objectives. She has AOE in her kit, so her damage output will be pretty high if your whole team is grouped together. When it comes to the mid and late-game, you should look to pick her off when she is away from her team. If she is split-pushing, you could look to take her down while she is alone.

3. Mel Power Spikes

Mel’s first power spike is at levels 3 and 4. She will have 2 points in her first ability, which will deal more damage. When Mel gets her Ultimate, she will have more trading potential, enabling her to get kills against you. Make sure you recall if you’re low so she cannot get a kill advantage. Mel will always be stronger when she has her W available. You must get her to use this ability before you look to finish her off.

Mel is really hard to beat in the current patch, but here are a few tips:

• If you get hit by her R, try to escape to dodge her Q, as it synergizes well with her passive.
• Her W has a long cooldown, so plan carefully before engaging.
• Her E can stun in a straight line, so sidestep to either side to greatly reduce the chance of getting hit.
