I’ll share some tips and tricks that’ll help you escape Iron elo fast. Use what you learn here in your next games, and you’ll be on your way to Bronze and beyond in no time.
Climbing out of Iron elo in League of Legends — aka the bottom of the ranked ladder — can oftentimes feel like a battle you’re destined to lose. From teammates running it down mid to flame wars in the chat, it can seem as if you’re truly in the pits of hell. However… I hate to break it to you: If you’re stuck in Iron elo, the only reason you’re there is because of, well, you. Not your teammates.
Now we’ve ripped that Band-Aid off, here comes the good news. Since you’re responsible for your elo, it means it is completely within your power to escape Iron — you just need the right strategy.
In this post, I’ll share some tips and tricks that’ll help you escape Iron elo fast. Use what you learn here in your next games, and you’ll be on your way to Bronze (and above) in no time.
1. Limit Your Champion Pool
A common misconception is that playing as many Champions as possible will help you climb the ranked ladder. After all, with a large Champion pool, you’ll be able to counter any Champion the enemy picks and won’t have a problem if some of your Champions are banned out in champ select… Right?
Well, no. A large Champion pool actually hinders your progress, especially in Iron elo. As the saying goes, a jack of all trades is a master of none — even if you feel you can play several Champions to a good level, you likely haven’t mastered their mechanics or the ins and outs of their kits. This means the likes of counters, synergies, and matchups aren't going to be relevant.
Since you’re not entirely confident about the Champions you're playing, it also means you’ll be focused on landing their abilities rather than keeping your eye on the mini-map, which can leave you vulnerable to ganks and stolen objectives.

Stick to one to two roles, and put all your time into mastering a couple of Champions. It’s a good idea to make sure that one of those Champions can be played in multiple roles in case you’re auto-filled.
Practice their mechanics and combos in the dedicated practice tool, read in-depth guides (available on me blog), and watch streams of professionals playing the Champions to get a feel of how to approach the laning phase, and how they should be played into different matchups.
By mastering your chosen Champions, you’ll be able to confidently win your lane — or at least come out even — in every game you play. This will put you at a huge advantage in every match, which will translate to more wins and LP in the long run.
2. Avoid Mechanically Difficult Champions
Look. We all love flashy Champions. They’re fun, get your adrenaline pumping, and allow you to flex your fingers in a way that Garen’s “spin to win” just can’t.
However, this flashy playstyle comes at a huge price: It’s seriously hard to master. And by spending all your time attempting to hone the Champions’ mechanics? You’re neglecting learning about all the other facets of the game, like map awareness, CSing, objective control, itemization, and lane rotation — all of which will give you a better chance of climbing up the ranked ladder.
Stick to Champions you enjoy with relatively simple kits (i.e. playing them won’t leave your fingers cramped after every match). You can find me top picks for the best champions to climb with in low elo here.
3. Brush Up Your CSing
Securing kills in LoL can help you get ahead and snowball your way to victory. However, it’s not the most reliable way to climb. Farming effectively provides you with a consistent income source with a lot less risk involved, and it also ensures you’ll have a gold lead in every match you play.
If you’re ahead in gold, you’ll be able to build your items quicker than your opponents and have the upper hand in the likes of objective fights, skirmishes, and duels. Plus, it means your lane opponent will always be behind and won’t be able to retaliate against you when you roam.
Brushing up your CSing does take a lot of practice, but it’s worth the effort and time involved. There are plenty of online resources that can teach you the basics of CSing — like me personal guide — and you can use the practice tool to work on your farming in a low-pressure environment. You should also familiarize yourself with minion gold values, wave management techniques, and how to farm under turrets.
4. Hone Your Map Awareness
There’s no point in farming well if you’re not using your gold lead to make an impact around the map. That’s why it’s vital to hone your map awareness too. By keeping a close eye on the mini-map and what’s happening in your other allies’ lanes, you’ll be able to shot call effectively and make informed plays that can change the tide of the match.
Honing map awareness is especially useful in Iron, since low-elo players often take sub-optimal paths that leave them vulnerable to picks (or key objectives ripe for the taking).
Of course, keeping your eye on the mini-map is easier said than done when you have a million other things to juggle. That’s why I recommend using an audio cue to start with. An audio cue can help remind you to check the mini-map every few seconds even when you’re caught up in the action. I also recommend enlarging the size of your mini-map in the in-game settings.
5. Become Untiltable
The main reason players end up in Iron isn’t because they lack the skills to escape it. More often than not, it’s actually because they lack the mental “strength” to rise above tilt and keep a cool head.
When you’re tilted, you’re not able to focus on your gameplay and you’ll make impulsive, reckless decisions that cost you match after match. You’ll also be distracted and miss opportunities (like open objectives) that can turn losing games into wins.
Conclusion
Climbing is never easy, especially when you’re starting from the very bottom of the ladder. However, limiting your champion pool, brushing up your CS, and honing your mental strength are all strategies that’ll give you the initial boost to begin your journey up the ladder.
