Deck Description

  • By combining strong supporter cards like Cyrus, Irida and Barry with the new Snorlax basic pokemon introduced in the Triumphant Light A2a mini-set, the deck aims to knockout the opponent's early game frontline while ramping up energy and chipping away at the enemy's backline finisher.
  • The deck also includes 2x Shaymin's that will heal all of our Pokemon for 10hp every turn, meaning that not only do we prevent Snorlax from being knocked out early, we also counter opposing Cyrus' being used against us and negate any kind of Articuno-like effects on our bench.
  • To finish off, we use 1x Rocky Helmet over Giant Cape as a way to steer the opponent away from attacking into us, keeping Snorlax relatively healthy while we draw deeper into the deck and build more energy to secure a final knockout.

Strategy

SETUP PHASE

  • Regardless if we go first or second with this deck, we always want Snorlax in the Active Zone during setup phase.
  • If we don't have Snorlax, place Froakie in the Active Zone over Shaymin.
  • It's much better to maintain two Shaymin's early on than try to build two Greninja lines.

TURN 1 (GOING FIRST)

  • Play your trainer cards as you normally would to find your other supporters and basics.
  • I prefer to use Professor's Research then Pokeball in that order as you want to find more supporter cards over basics.
  • Since we cannot place any energy this turn, I would hold on to your other basics in hand unless you have a 2nd Snorlax.
  • If that's the case, place the 2nd Snorlax and 1x Froakie to enable it for an evolution on your following turn.

TURN 1 (GOING SECOND)

  • Same thing here with opening hand, play your trainer cards and fill the bench like you would going first.
  • This time we have an opportunity to place an energy somewhere on our board.
  • Almost everytime you are going to place an energy on to your Active Snorlax.
  • This sets you up for an attack on your following turn if you have Barry in your hand.
  • In the case where you do NOT have an Active Snorlax, you will have to place energy on to the Active Froakie or Shaymin and IMMEDIATELY retreat into Snorlax if possible.

EARLY GAME

  • Few things to look out for here is to quickly add up the total amount of damage that your opponent can dish out 2 or 3 turns ahead.
  • Knowing this, you should make it as difficult for your opponent to get a significant point advantage on you.
  • The way we go about achieving this is allocating our energy correctly when looking at any given board state.
  • If we can see a scenario where the opponent is trying to score a knockout point using a specific supporter card, place your energy somewhere else that won't let it go to waste if they potentially do score it and lets you set up for a revenge knockout when it's your turn again.
  • Try to get an early knockout point with your Active Snorlax + Barry, then work on your 2nd Snorlax or Greninja.

LATE GAME

  • By turn 5 onwards, you want 2x Shaymin's, 1 Greninja and 1 Snorlax with around 1-2 energy attached to the Snorlax.
  • You will most likely still have 1x Cyrus and 1x Barry to use and wondering how to get those last 2 points to secure the victory.
  • Depending on the board state, either use Barry to get that 2nd point with Snorlax OR get that big hit with Cyrus + Shuriken for 120 damage on the opponent's late game heavy hitter.
  • If the opponent decides to hit back, they take another 20 damage from Rocky Helmet and then finally you can Shuriken for an extra 20 damage, giving us a total of 160 damage.
  • If their Pokemon is STILL alive, you probably had a left over energy on Greninja anyway + the energy you will attach on your turn, giving you another 60 damage, now giving you a total of 220 damage, to hopefully get the knockout.

FINAL THOUGHTS This deck has felt good to play with so far and I'm sure there is a better build for Snorlax somewhere. Everything I've written here is just my way of playing the deck so if you have suggestions or recommendations for the deck I would love to hear from you. Thanks for reading :)
