What is this Guide about?
Superfan is an incredibly useful trait no matter what comp you play. Outside of granting items and Omnivamp, you can utilize this trait to itemize your carry however you please without getting punished. In this guide I will explain the item removal method in detail and go over a few examples to help you understand how to utilize this tech.
The Item Dump Problem
Activating the Superfan taits grants your current Headliner a specific item. If you are interested in the full list, you can check the Superfan Item Guide on Tacter. Since most of the time your early / mid game revolves around your Headliner you want to make sure they receive all of your items.
However this can sometimes lead to a potential conflict. You want to give items to your strongest unit, but what if you intend to play this unit until the end? For example let's say you have a Edge of NIght available with a Katarina Headliner who currently still has item slots open. You would be stronger if you give her the item, but this would weaken your late game.
Or maybe you three decent items on your Carry, but all of a sudden you receive a free Ornn Artifact or radiant Item that would be perfect. Since you don't want to sell your unit, normally you would have to wait until the unit is 3 Star. This is where the Superfan tech comes into play.
Removing Your Items
As long as you have Superfan active, your Headliner will receive a bonus item. But there are two scenarios that can mess up the trait:
-
Your Headliner already has three items and then you place 3 Superfans on your board
-
You temporarily move your Superfan units on the bench to disable the effect, then proceed to block all item slots on your Headliner, before returning your Superfans back to the board.
In both scenarios the game wants to give the bonus item to your Headliner, but the item slots are blocked off. After fighting one round with either of these setups, a new interaction will take place.
As long as you have space on your item bench, all of the items of your Headliner will drop off. It's pretty much the same as if you had used a Magnetic Remover. This interaction is intentional and it now allows you to freely change all the items you want on your Headliner.
Example - Katarina Reroll
-
Katarina has Jeweled Gauntlet, Edge of Night and Hand of Justice. Edge of Night was an item I used to help stay healthy in early / mid game, but it's not an item I want to run on Katarina*3 in the late game. I make sure all item slots are blocked and run 3 Superfan.
-
At the start of the next round I receive the message "Your Superfans made room for their item". The three items will return to my item Bench and Katarina currently has a Hand of Justice from the Superfan trait.
-
I give Katarina Jeweled Gauntlet and a second Hand of Justice to finish her late game item build and move Edge of Night to a different unit.
Tips and Tricks
If items take a while to return you don't need to be scared, they should arrive on your board before combat starts again. Sometimes the items have to fly across the map to return to you, but this process was recently sped up by Riot in a recent patch.
If you're not running a setup with Superfan you can simply keep Lilia/Kennen/Gnar on your item bench. Field them during a PVE round and use the item to change the items on your Headliner. This way you don't risk losing a fight by weakening your board. You should be able to win all PVE rounds even if you're running a few weak units.
