How to Play Techie — TFT Set 14: Cyber City

Welcome to our trait guide, where we’ll be covering the Techie trait in the new TFT Set 14: Cyber City. In this guide, we’ll explain how Techie works, cover the different champions, and give a quick rundown of the other potential traits you could branch into.

Explore all of the new Set 14 traits here!

How TFT Techie Works

Techie Trait Bonus

Champions: Seraphine 1g / Zyra 1g / Shyvana 2g / Veigar 2g / Fiddlesticks 3g / Mordekaiser 3g / Brand 4g / Viego 5g

Techies gain Ability Power. Enemies hit by their abilities deal 10% less damage for 3 seconds.

  • (2) 15 AP
  • (4) 45 AP
  • (6) 80 AP
  • (8) 110 AP Enemies hit deal 18% less damage.

Techie has the largest cast among all of the class traits and is the only one to offer a powerful incentive for going vertical. Even at a baseline, all Techies get to temporarily reduce the damage of any enemies hit by their abilities. That’s a very strong effect, especially considering you only need two pieces to acquire it.

This makes each Techie much stronger than they read at face value, because the debuff adds extra utility beyond their regular capabilities. On top of that, if you decide to go vertical, you’ll get a huge 110 AP buff while making the damage reduction even stronger (10% to 18%).

Techie Synergy

Here’s a rundown of the traits you can branch into from Techie:

  • Seraphine – Anima Squad
  • Zyra – Street Demon
  • Shyvana – Nitro / Bastion
  • Veigar – Cyberboss
  • Fiddlesticks – BoomBots
  • Mordekaiser – Exotech / Bruiser
  • Brand – Street Demon
  • Viego – Soul Killer / Golden Ox

Seeing as how Techie has a wide variety of units, it’s not too surprising to find an overlap between traits. Zyra and Brand share Street Demon, adding further value if you decide to go that vertical route. Although without any added synergies, given the strong debuffing utility of Techie, it’s very much worth at least picking up and incorporating the two piece bonus whenever possible.

TFT Techie Champions

Seraphine Anima Squad Techie 1g

Seraphine is extremely simple on the surface. Her ability “Ping” fires a soundwave through the current target, dealing magic damage to each enemy hit. Without any CC or extra utility this doesn’t appear to be anything special, but let’s not forget the damage reduction Techie provides. This makes Seraphine a decent early pickup until you eventually transition to stronger options in the mid game.

Zyra Street Demon Techie 1g

Zyra’s Stroke of Brilliance ability sends a large vine towards her target, dealing magic damage and Stunning them. An additional smaller vine also attacks the nearest target for more magic damage. As a 1-cost unit with CC attached to a multi-damaging ability, Zyra is a solid choice. Although what’s even better is having both Street Demon + Techie traits, making her a great asset for later trait webs.

Shyvana Nitro Bastion Techie 2g

Shyvana does a lot for a 2-cost unit. Having three traits is the obvious first benefit, but her scalable tanking capabilities make for a close second. As long as she can survive until her first cast she’ll continuously heal and deal magic damage throughout the fight, eventually getting even stronger after subsequent casts.

Veigar Cyberboss Techie 2g

Veigar’s Cyber Supremacy ability deals a burst of AoE magic damage to his target and nearby enemies. However, if Veigar is the Cyberboss, he also deals bonus true damage so long as he is the same star level or higher than the target (dealing extra damage if higher). Pretty solid if you lean into Cyberboss, but otherwise unlikely to be worth using for long.

Fiddlesticks BoomBots Techie 3g

Fiddlesticks tethers to the three closest enemies within range, dealing magic damage to each of them. This tether also applies Shred and heals Fiddlesticks for a percentage of the damage dealt. Combined with Techie this allows Fiddlesticks to apply two debuffs at once, giving some added utility on top of the damage and healing.

Mordekaiser Exotech Brusier Techie 3g

Mordekaiser has a lot going for him. He’s a 3-cost champion with three useful traits, and his active ability can be extremely effective if positioning lines up favorably. Casting the ability grants Mordekaiser a Shield before dealing magic damage in a line. Best of all, each enemy hit gets Stunned. Having an AoE stun is super premium, and with everything else on top of that, Mordekaiser is likely to be highly sought after.

Brand Street Demon Techie 4g

Brand’s ability launches a Paint Bomb at the largest cluster of enemies within range, dealing magic damage to those within the area of the blast. It’s just straight up raw damage. However, keep in mind that Brand pairs perfectly with Zyra, making him a likely inclusion if you’re building a vertical Street Demon comp.

Viego Soul Killer Golden Ox Techie 5g

Viego’s signature trait Soul Killer is a huge asset in the late game. This creates a hologram copy (with modified stats) of the highest cost enemy that Viego aided in killing the prior round. Having this alone already justifies Viego’s slot on the team, but that’s not all he can do.

Passively Viego restores Health whenever any unit dies (allies or foes), while his active has him jump towards the largest clump of enemies, dealing magic damage and Shredding them. Combined with Techie this lets Viego both weaken the enemies’ offense and defense. If you’ve been investing into spellcasters, Viego will be an outstanding addition to the team.
